The Ministry of Health emphasises that HMPV is already in circulation worldwide, including India, and cases have been reported in various countries. Current data from ICMR and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) show that there has been no unusual increase in cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) or severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) across the country.
The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation through all available surveillance channels. ICMR will continue to monitor trends in HMPV throughout the year. Additionally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is providing periodic updates on the situation in China to inform about ongoing measures.
A recently conducted preparedness exercise across the country has demonstrated that India is well equipped to handle any potential surge in respiratory illnesses, and public health interventions are ready to be deployed immediately if required.
Preventive measures:
To reduce the risk of HMP virus infection, the following preventive measures are recommended:
- Hand hygiene: Regularly wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid close contact: Limit close contact with individuals displaying respiratory symptoms.
- Disinfect surfaces: Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Respiratory etiquette: Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
- Stay informed: Keep getting updates from health officials about HMPV and other respiratory viruses.
While the detection of HMP virus cases in Karnataka is noteworthy, health officials assure that there is no cause for concern. The surveillance system is robust, and the public is advised to continue following standard preventive measures to reduce the spread of respiratory infections.
